Here is an interesting article giving light to the Innersection TV GoPro Contest that left us with our jaws on the ground...

Wait....who? Pierce Flynn. The guy from our recent GOPRO ROUND. Still don't remember? Okay, I've pasted his GoPro section down below. But let's not get sidetracked, I'm trying to make a point here.

Pierce got screwed. Guinea pigged. Example-ifiied. Cheated by The Man. And Taylor Steele is The Man.

See, Pierce was the #5 section in the GoPro Round, and we used him to make a point. For all four rounds of the 2011 Innersection, the #5 spot is now a wild card hand-picked by Taylor Steele.

"This is something we've been thinking about since the beginning," explains Taylor, "but we thought we'd wait for the first year to see if it was necessary. We think it adds another dimension to the ways guys can make it onto the movie."

In truth, we were pretty happy with how the first year of Innersection played out. You guys did great selecting the best sections. The first couple finishers were always pretty obvious. Clearly the best. We always announced them first to last, cause the final spot or two is where the lines get blurry....

We just got our first order of these completes at Wetsand. Cool cruisers, and good lookin'. Who are you supporting when you buy a GoldCoast? Skateboarders, first and foremost. We get a lot of joy out of these little wooden toys, and everything that comes with them. Friends, trips, music, art. Not to mention a community of likeminded people, who may have other interests, but can relate on the common thread of fun. We chose the name GoldCoast because anywhere that has a coast, seems to have one that's gold. So it's just a nod to getting out there, where ever that might be, and seeing and doing, and living. Lofty? Maybe. But we get inspired by it, and we hope you do to.

Mary surfs China

Mary Osborne recently travels to surf the Qiantang tidal bore in China. It boggled my mind that as I was sitting in my living room eating BBQ chicken and watching a Netflix, little Mary was about to surf on this giant river in China! Here is some words from Mary:
"The wave comes in a very rapid pace with the incoming tide. We time it, then chase it until it breaks. Different parts of the rivers make for the wave to increase and decrease in size and the way the river is shaped effects it. To put it in perspective it takes almost 30 minutes from our launching point to get to the beginning of the wave. It is a pretty amazing to watch and try to figure it out. When I first saw it coming at me my heart was shaking. It was a giant wall of whitewater in the distance heading right towards our skis. We have one chance to ride it and not make a mistake. We ride as long as we can before our legs give out, then try to switch partners on the jet ski before the wave crumbles us. We have police escorts, camera crew on boats aside us and two main jet skis. Big wave surfers Jaime Sterling and Mikala jones are one team. I am with partnered with Wingnut (Endless summer two and who I travel a lot with) so we are learning how to trade off quickly, maneuver our giant longboards around on a tiny ski, avoid getting attacked by the "Silver Dragon" while still trying to make it look effortless. Yesterday was a bit challenging when I flew off the back of the ski during a transition because my leash got wrapped around the sled. Luckily, I landed right before the giant wall of water, whipped myself around, and rode the surge until my legs were burning.Poor Wingy didn't get a proper turn so today I will be the first driver. Meanwhile, there are large barges on the river, metal sticking out in various places due to construction, four major bridges to avoid and lots of weather elements in our face. Its pouring rain at the moment. It is predicted that over a few million viewers will be heading down to watch this natural phenomenon that has been going on for over 300 years. This is the third time in history that surfing has been allowed by the government officials. On a normal full moon occurance it is illegal to surf in this river and most likely unsafe for a beginner or average person. Who knows if this will ever change, but the fact that we are here promoting action sports and a healthy lifestyle is a huge start."

PC grew out of a desire for a new board, a side porch that was too clean, and the thought that, "If I can build it, I will." Four years later here it is...custom surfboards built by hand, in one shop in downtown Santa Barbara. While the shaping and glass work is done by Ryan, the whole of Point Concept exists only because of the energy and influence that the customers and close friends bring into to the shop daily.
The designs come from conversations and the waves that exist daily; the art comes from inspiration and a few crossed wires. The two elements come together during the shaping and construction of each board, and exist only to transfer that magical feeling through your board and into the bottom of your feet.

Check out this hand made bodysurfing toy by Jeff Beck of Ninelights Surfboards. Jeff is known for his beautiful hand made wooden surfboards. These bodysurfing handboards are made out of solid Paulownia wood. This is the same type of wood used to make alaias. It's prized for it's buoyancy, rot resistance, and durability. Finished with a few coats of linseed oil, these boards are light, responsive, and very floaty. If you need to tighten or loosen the strap, simply unscrew the stainless steel hardware on one side, adjust and re-tighten. They also come with a leash string so you don't lose it in the surf.

Lomography...Cool Cat Cameras

Lomography cameras are the newest, coolest thing since sliced bread. These cameras are affordable, cool and give us a new appreciation of "film" cameras!
They have a range of cameras, but my new favorite is the "Diana"....
Back in the early ‘60s, the Diana camera was a cult legend, famous for its dreamy, radiant, lo-fi images. The Diana+ is a new twist on the classic – a faithful reproduction with lots of cool new features thrown in! The Diana allows you to take pinhole photos, panoramic images, 35mm shots, and the option to use special Diana+ lenses.

Hot new sounds...

It is difficult to classify the sounds of Rey Fresco. While the word "unique" is too often thrown around, in this case "unique" is fitting when considering Rey Fresco's lead instrument is a 36 string Veracruz harp accompanied by soulful vocals, a pumping bassline, and a booming drum sound resignating from a kit built out of surfboard fiberglass. The VC Reporter calls Rey Fresco "An eclectic, multicultural group of guys with authentic passion for music."
The unique instrumentation and original songwriting has lead Rey Fresco to organically build a buzz. Most recently to the point of sold out shows along the California coast. Perhaps the VC Reporter put it best when the proclaimed Rey Fresco is "preparing to explode."

Why do you want a custom Biofoam board anyway?

1. Biofoam is stronger than regular foam. You can see this by looking at a board made with Biofoam that has been ridden for a year and notice there are barely any pressure dings.

2. Biofoam is more sustainable than any other foam. The mix is almost 50% soy oils blended with MDI polyurethane ,a non-carcinogenic alternative to TDI polyurethane.

Wibb Kiting

My good friend Cameron and his buddy Ty have been kite surfing Wibbulators for several months. Cameron has one quiver for surfing and for kiting...Wibb mania. If you see a couple of younger guys, between C-Street and Jalama, doing some powered up strapless kite surfing on Pleskunas Wibbs you can bet it's them.

Wahine Kai - Mary Osborne

The Wahine Kai Surf Club (Orange County) recently took a trip north to Ventura. They went for a surf with our good friend Mary Osborne and also came by the WetSand Surf Shop. And back down south they took an exclusive surfboard factory tour with Robert August, Mary's longboard sponsor.

Wahine Kai is Hawaiian for "Women of the Sea." Wahine Kai is open to women of all surfing abilities over the age of 18. Whether you are a shortboarder, longboarder or even a boogie boarder, you all have something to contribute to the organization. Through the association, all members can improve their surfing and technique with the help of other members and specialized clinics. The purpose of the organization is to have fun surfing together as women while creating a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

Chuck Vinson Down Rail Lightning Bolt

Friend and Ventura resident Chuck Vinson dropped this beautiful board off at the WetSand shop a few weeks ago. Chuck shaped boards under the Lightning Bolt label during the 70's. This down railer is straight out of that era...with maybe a bit more of a modern foil...pin tail, resin tint, glassed on fin, and no leash plug. Right now you can find this board and a Vinson v-bottom on the rack in the WetSand Surf Shop. Living in Ventura I surf a lot with Chuck...he's a great surfer, great shaper, and a genuinely nice guy.

Jon Wegener Alaias

We got our first batch of Wegener Alaias from Tom back in October. They showed up at WetSand in a big box from OZ. We had to hire a customs agent to help us get them which tacked on quite a bit to our cost and was reflected in the retail price. Tom's brother Jon has spent a considerable amount of time down under dialing in the alaia shapes with his brother. We've sold all 7 alaias that we got from Tom and so at his suggestion we placed our latest order with Jon. These boards have v where Tom's had concave and you can see the subtle differences in the styles of the two siblings. These are two od my favorites. Note the swallowtail and the wood burned graphic. We've got 6 right now with 4 more on the way.

Big Worm

Worm (Matt Joyce) was our rep for Joel Tudor Surfboards. Worm was a super nice guy and a great surfer. Last month Worm passed away after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis. This morning my mom sent me a link to an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune titled, "Dozens Stage Ride to Honor Memory of Friend." Champagne and Hot Dogs Art Show at WetSand

Preview WetSand's New SwellWatch

We're excited to let you know that we are getting close to launching a new version of SwellWatch (WetSand's surf forecasting system).

While we aren't quite ready to announce it to the general public, we are ready to have a limited number of people give it a whirl.

Went to go visit photographer Greg Hughlin a few weeks ago while he was in the middle of cleaning out some old storage space…we came across some gems that he sent us home to Ventura with. Included were several large prints of beautiful Hughlin images as well as a slough of old (and new) movie posters including Dolphin Glide, Evolution, Morning of the Earth, Free Ride, A Sea for Yourself, and The Fantastic Plastic Machine. He also let us borrow a set of camera lights that Greenough used to film parts of The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun and one of Greenough’s windsurfing booms (not positive who made the boom). One of my favorite things of all the treasures we picked up is a small 8 ½ x 11”, 1975 surf film festival bill. The festival took place at 121 5th St. where it meets the 101 in Huntington Beach. And on every night during the months of October, November, and December you could go see a surf movie on the big screen. Each film showed for a week and there were two showings a night. Included in the ‘Festival Fantastic’ were Crystal Voyager, Morning of the Earth, and Super Session. The reality is that I wasn’t even alive in 1975, but when I started surfing these were the films that I gravitated towards and they remain some of the surf films that I connect with the most. I guess the reason that I like the festival flyer so much is because I’d be so stoked to see all of these movies in a theatre on a big screen. How cool would it be if someone recreated the festival al the line-up went something like this: Free Ride, Shelter, Morning of the Earth, Glass Love, The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun, Sprout, Cosmic Children, Super Session, Crystal Voyager, Litmus, Thicker Than Water, Surfing Hollow Days, A Sea For Yourself, Surfing Hollow Days, Longer, The Golden Breed, Surf Reels 1-14,Children of the Sun, A Winter’s Tale, The Golden Breed.....????

Ventura Life - Mary Osborne

Ventura is a pretty small town and in the vicinity live some of the best, most down to earth surfers in the world. Among them is our really good friend, and Patagonia Surf Ambassador, Mary Osborne. If you're going to be in, or through, the area before June make sure to pick up a copy of Ventura Life. Mary is gracing the cover in addition to a 6 page interview. There is also an article on our Mayor, Christy Weir, who happens to be the mother of one of our WetSand employees (like I said...small town). You can find the magazine in many of the shops and cafes near the WetSand Surf Shop (on Main St. in Downtown Ventura). The beautiful water shot on the cover was taken by David Pu'u, another good friend and Ventura resident.

Art Walk April '08

Another Art Walk has come and gone. This time our featured atrist was Wade Koniakowsky. The WetSand shop was busy all weekend, but Saturday night was definately the high point. We hosted some more great musicians including Rory and Seth from Wave Tribe, Ashley Lloyd, and Denny Aaberg.

Ultimate Boarder Party

About a week ago we had a big party at the WetSand Surf Shop. It was the Saturdat before the final skate competition of the Ultimate Boarder contest. Main St in Ventura was closed down between Oak and California...right in front of the shop...there were ramps and stages in the street. That night we hosted a couple of our favorite bands... Rey Fresco...and Todd Hannigan & The Heavy 29's. We also had a free raffle with a new high aspect twin fin surfboard as the grand prize...as always the shop was packed. Super Fun night.

Vaqueros de las Olas

I grew up in San Diego, but my cousins grew up in Ventura. My mom lives down there in OB and when I finally moved to Ventura I couldn't help but see the parallels between it and Ocean Beach (South). Sometimes when I explain to old friends what it's like up here I tell them it's kinda like OB with fewer hippies and more cowboys. Both towns are super eclectic and have solid contingents of POW's, Bikers, Transients, and Surfers. One of the coolest parts about Ventura, Ventucky, or Bakersfield by the Sea is that most of the surfers don't "look" like surfers...whatever that means. A cowboy hat around here is not a fashion trend, but a functional piece of equipment. From here North there is quite a bit of open land and that land is farmed and ranched. And the people from around here are a reflection of that culture. And so we come to the point of this little rant...Matt Miller rang me yesterday and left a message to look online at www.vaquerosdelasolas.com. They're not new, but they finally have a website...go check em out.

Sinus Rinse

We don't carry these in the WetSand Surf Shop and I'm not super into endorsing products, but this is something that every surfer should own. The NeilMed Sinus Rinse. Best thing ever to fight off sinus infections...from the water or otherwise. Was pretty wierd to use at first. Basically you heat it up and add a packed of saline...then you squirt it up your nostril and it comes shooting out the other one. Once you get over the idea of shooting water up your nose you learn to love it.

Tim Flannery 1988 Fleer

I'm originally from San Diego and am a lifelong Padre fan. As a youngster I collected baseball cards and remembered having this card of Tim Flannery where he was holding a surfboard. I knew it was a fleer card, but couldn't remember what year. Anyway...was down at Moonlight Glassing several monthas ago and saw they had a picture of Tony Gwynn up in the shop. Figured they were also Padre fans so I decided to track down the Flannery card. Kept typing into google and ended up finding this rad site called Funny and Strange Baseball Cards. I found out what year the card was through that site and then went onto ebay to find the card. I found 3 1988 Padre team sets for $.50 a piece and purchased them...one for me, one for my mom, and one for the Moonlight Glassing crew. Some surfers shun ball sports, but I learned a lot of things through them including teamwork, work ethic, leadership, and responsibility. So I sent the card down to Moonlight just as a small thank you for all the great glass jobs. A while later I got an email from Sally St Pierre that contained some background on the card. Ends up Greg Sauritch's brother used to work for Fleer and took the photo.They used to glass a lot of Sauritch's boards and also had the honor of glassing a fe boards for Tim and his son Danny. With the regular season about to start I thought this post would be appropriate.
